Product Description
From the Manufacturer
This paragraph is background info, you may skip it to get right to my review. To put my review into perspective: I am a student, not a pro. I have built a couple of decks, completed a room renovation, and numerous smaller tasks. That said, I first got interested in do-it-yourself work four years ago while working in a bar my junior year. I was advised by the bar manager (and handyman) to invest in good tools if I want to learn how to build/fix basic things. On his recommendation I bought the Dewalt 18v 4-tool cordless combo kit. This kit is great but there are a couple of negatives: It is hard to use larger diameter hole saws to drill into wood; The circular saw is underpowered and the 6.5 inch blade preventes the use of the variety of blades available in the standard 7 and 7.25 size; NiCad batteries have relatively short lifespan, charge capacity, and have trailing performance as the charge decreases. In other words, you need a corded circular saw and possibly a corded drill depending on the job. When I saw the new 36v kit, I asked myself if I really needed it. I decided that I could get rid of some of my corded tools (and my 18v kit) if this 36 volt kit lived up to it's potential.
Circular Saw:
My favorite part of this combo kit. Weighs a bit more than the 18v, but it's still pretty light. In any case, I like a circular saw to have some weight since it makes it easier to guide. Powerful enough to cut a brick (I used a thin kerf Dewalt diamond blade), it cuts through lumber with ease. Best of all, the saw accepts standard 7.25 inch blades. This gives the user access to the blades not available to users of standard cordless 6.5 inch circular saws. Also, the base plate is pretty good and some users may like the blade positioned on the left. The circular saw is the reason I upgraded to the 36v kit and I'm not disappointed. I'll probably sell my corded before I move to my new apartment.
Reciprocating saw:
Amazing. Feels like I am cutting with a corded Milwaukee 11 amp saw (probably sell that too now). Weighs only .2 lb more than the 18v! The reciprocating saw has always been my favorite tool (it's fun to be destructive) and this one lives up to all of my expectations. I was happy with the 18v, but the 36v brings the game to a new level. The saw never bogs down, the shoe has three positions (good for blade life and setting depth), and there is a horizontal blade clamp for flush cutting (sooooo useful). The only feature lacking is an orbital option (not a huge deal). This saw can do anything a corded can.
Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver:
Powerful enough to do anything a corded can do. While a drill/driver is probably the most used tool, I rarely use the 36v version because it's heavy for extended work. It will benefit anyone purchasing this kit to have a basic 12v drill/driver for extended use. I would like to emphasize this point for homeowners and DIYers because it is frequently the case that one goes into a home store, handles a 6.5 lb. drill/driver and thinks, "hey, this isn't bad." Unfortunately, having that weight in your hands for more than a few moments may bring about fatigue which not only makes working difficult, but dangerous. Start with a lighter, cordless drill/driver and consider buying a corded drill for power unless you're gonna need it enough to justify the additional cost of cordless.
Flashlight:
It's a light, flex neck is nice, great 8 hour runtime.
Batteries/Charger:
The best part of this kit are the Li-Ion batteries. Compared to NiCad, these batteries deliver consistent power to the very end of the charge, have two to three times the runtime, self discharge at a much slower rate, stay cool under heavy usage, and the 36v Li-Ion WEIGHS THE SAME as the 18v NiCad. It is VERY IMPORTANT to stop using the battery as soon as you see a drop in usable power (happens at the very end of the charge), otherwise the battery may be permanently damaged. I wish Dewalt had built a charge indicator into the batteries for this reason, but they do provide a 2 year warranty on them. The charger functions well and has indicators for charge level.
Final note:
The first two reviewers have written their reviews without having used or even handled these tools; that much is clear from reading what they have written. Whatever their motives, it would be wise to take their opinions with a grain of salt. Also, the review by MDT seems heavily biased toward Makita tools. His point is valid regarding the weight of the drill/driver (I address this in my review also), but he is wrong when he claims that all of the tools are too "bulky and heavy." The tools actually have excellent balance and reasonable weight for the intended application. Go to your local homestore and hold them for yourself. If I am wrong about MDT's bias, he may be appeased by purchasing a Makita Li-Ion 18v drill/driver and this combo kit. This way, the 18v Li-Ion, weighing the same as a 12v Dewalt, can be his light weight drill/driver and he has the 36v for more demanding applications.

Samsung 3D LED HDTV Best Price Review
When I purchased this TV from Amazon.com I had already decided on this Samsung 52" series and was trying to decide between the 650 and the 750. At the time there was a small price difference between the two on Amazon.com. I ended up choosing the 650 because I was placing the TV inside a nook that had limited space.
The 650 has a less bulky frame around the LCD screen and therefore it was only 50.2 inches wide as compared to the 750 which is 52" wide. Both screens have the exact same visual display area. Beyond trying to accommodate my limited space, I felt that the smaller frame looked nicer on the TV than the larger frame.
The other reason I chose the 650 is that it can swivel on the base, whereas the 750 is fixed on its base. Because I have placed the TV in a nook, this swivel feature has come in very handy as I have had to get behind it from time to time to plug in cords, etc.
I have read a lot about screen reflection and was bracing myself for a potentially unpleasant experience during daytime viewing, especially since the room the TV is in has windows all the way across two walls and is full of sunlight daily. I'm happy to report that screen reflection is absolutely no problem. The TV that I was replacing with the Samsung LCD was an older 32" Panasonic Panablack analog TV with the glass screen, which had a lot of reflection. As a point of reference, the Samsung has about 20% of the screen reflection of my old TV (judging from when the TV is off). When the TV is on, the Samsung has about 5% of screen reflection compared with what I used to have with my old TV, which may be due to the incredible brightness of the display.
I spent a number of months on this decision and I feel like I hit a home run with this purchase. Samsung has certainly exceeded my expectations with this model and I have been very satisfied with my first experience of buying a TV online from Amazon.com.
DEC 20, 2008 UPDATE: I've now owned the TV for more than 6 months. No regrets. The TV has survived well in a family with 5 kids under age 10. It's taken some direct hits to the screen with toys thrown by a 2-year-old but any marks on the screen easily rubbed off. It still looks just like the day I first got it and runs perfectly. I'm very happy with this purchase.
JUNE 7, 2009 UPDATE: Still going strong after 1 year. Absolutely no problems with the TV. Best purchase I ever made. Everyone who has seen it can hardly believe the picture quality. I get positive comments all the time.

Product Description
I have had this machine for about a month. I have made a quilt, 4 shirts, and 3 sets of curtains with it. I am a sewing novice. I spent some time on my mother's machine as a kid, it was unfortunate as it broke a lot, and now I'm really learning how to do it through quilting and sewing classes.
Pros:
Auto tension! I love it. It works every time.
Drop in bobbin! I will never go back.
Easy to select stitches. (however,do read the manual before doing
twin needle work!)
Lots of choices for embellishing items with embroidery.
So far, no issues and I've sewn heavy and light fabrics.
Cons:
The autothreader takes more work than doing it myself.
You will need another light source if you like to sew at night.
I don't like that to reverse stitch I have to hold the button at
the same time I guide my fabric. Couldn't they just let me press
the button, then press the button again when I'm done with
reverse? (That's not novice friendly!)
A bit heavy to carry. I'm tough, but carrying it for more than a
short walk will get to you. Get a rollerboard carrier and skip
the plastic case.

Product Description
I definitely wanted a video monitor, because my bedroom is upstairs and the baby is downstairs. Having a video monitor is great because you can check if the baby's awake or just squawking in his sleep before you go all the way in there. I've tried three: this one, the Mobi Cam, and the new Safety First version. Both the other two got constant static that caused the picture to flicker and a clicking sound to come through on the audio. This one is USUALLY static free, accept for a periodic BLARE, usually in the middle of the night. It's pretty frustating, but I've now found a low enough volume level whereby the static won't scare me out of bed when it hits but I can still hear if my son cries.
As for the other features, the "color" is pretty poor, but the night vision works fairly well. It's very nice that it's portable, and that you don't HAVE to mount the camera--you can place it on a flat surface and angle it to see. I also like that when it's unplugged, the video shuts off after a couple minutes so it doesn't drain your battery. Then you can pop it back on (or off) with the touch of a big button on top. When it's plugged in, the video will stay on all night, but I feel like it starts to get warm when I leave the picture on too long. I generally shut it off until he makes noise, then I turn on the picture to see what's going on down there.
Since I've tried THREE video monitors, and this worked the best in my house, I thought I'd pass the research along.

Britax Frontier 85 Combination Booster Car Seat, Rushmore Low Price
Product Description
If you're not familiar with Britax, I believe they are the BEST car seats you can spend your money on. We own a Marathon for our very long 3.5 year old and now that our also very long 10 month old had outgrown her infant carrier, I knew what brand to turn to. Since last having a child, Britax has added some new safety features to their already super safe car seats.
! I won't bore you with the logistics of why this is such a safe car seat, you can watch videos and read the research on Britax's website for yourself (I know I did ENDLESS research as I imagine you're doing right now
). I can tell you that once out of the box, I couldn't believe how the shell (which is now reinforced with steel bars) curved around and literally surrounded where your child sits. I installed pretty quickly rear facing (with seat belt and tether). If you've done this before, it's not different, lock off and pull tight. If you're unfamiliar with Britax, you can watch a quick video and do it easily. Once installed, I put my 10 month old in and noticed immediately how supported her head was, and overall, how her whole body was being cradled. The high density comfort foam and super soft cowmooflage cover also contributed to the whole cradling effect of the seat. The quick adjust harness is INCREDIBLE. I repeat, INCREDIBLE. The mechanism (a wide button) is smooth and easy to pull up or push down. No more uninstalling the car seat and dismantling the whole thing to adjust straps to the perfect height. I am so glad I sprang for this car seat, I went back and forth between the Boulevard and the Advocate but the extra $40ish you'll spend on the side impact technology (the "cushions" on the side of the car seat) is well worth it. In our case, we have an older car with no rear side air bags and I have 2 kids riding outboard (2 car seats behind the driver and passenger seats). I can really see how this would absorb some of the impact in the event of a crash. This seat is a tank that is super padded, will cradle your child (and installed correctly) will keep your child safe. I am in love with the Advocate 70 CS. In this case, you truly get what you pay for. It's super safe, so plush and comfortable and easy to use. It's the most expensive thing I've ever purchased for my children but well worth it. Highly recommended.
